1. Diversity, multi-cultural environment, and my community experience relishes several generations of community support with emphasis on customer service, a helpful hand with others, and getting involved by supporting my community. One form of my involvement is with the American Cancer Society “Relay For Life”: a team event to fight cancer. My participation was an essential part of the event because I volunteer each year as music provider and co-MC.
I was born in Pittsburg, grew up in Antioch, married, and raised a family in Oakley: currently living in Antioch once again. My experience living in East Contra Costa my entire life has been rewarding due to the richness of this diverse community. During my last 13-years as a producer for Comcast, I have nurtured all of my life experiences and became a better person because of it. I have managed many different groups, each of different ethnic backgrounds, which all helped me better understand the differences in interpersonal relationships: Subsequently, making me grow as a person by learning to care more about my community.
My involvement with Comcast as a sports producer enriched my contacts from people within my age group to a wealth of diverse people from all age groups and cultures. It was important that each of us learned from our experiences while working with one another. As a producer, I taught my crew about being equal no matter what job function you or someone else is accountable. Each week I rotated my crew assignments, making this the ultimate learning experience to all.
My outreach for crew involvement of sports games drew participation from high school and college students, and adults from nearby communities. Each was taught vital skills of participation and communication from me.
2. Personal computers and I go way back to the Commodores and early Apple IIc days. In my years of computer experience, I have not only learned how to input data into software programs, I have learned how to program some of our earlier computer platforms in Basic and COBOL (Common Business Oriented Language). My computer knowledge is very sophisticated. As you will notice in my resume (included), my skills are advanced in most cases. My learning curve is very steep. It does not take me very long to exceed any expectations when learning any new software package or office suite program.
I have always been able to perform/process any function into a database structure/system. Organization is one of the main functions of any database system. My experience with data entry at the Contra Costa Times has recently increased my knowledge and ability to function within a massive database environment. Search strings, filters, alphabetize, chronological, single pattern algorithms, finite string search, relationships, and more are samples of my database familiarity (no experience with bioinformatics). Online databases I frequent are wikipedia, dictionary, Internet Movie Database, MLB, and Craig’s List just to name a few.
3. Working as a team member is one of the most vital functions of any operation. As a team player, ideals for betterment and social relationships between colleagues and the public are orchestrated in greater fashion. Being a team player is a necessary part of life: both personal and professional. When I work with other team-members, I bring to the table many new and creative ideas. A team player, like me, uses their listening skills through the communication channel and supports all others who contribute to the better cause. I am responsible for my actions and I am flexible to all other ideas, functions, and concerns within the organization.
Before graduating last summer with my Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management, I learned, and put to the test, what it takes to function as a team player. 30% of all assignments rested on my teams’ ability to function together. Our team would meet several times each week to work together on assignments. As a team, we managed our own conflicts of interest, maintained stability, and enhanced our critical thinking skills. Nearly every week, we stood together as a team before the class to present, illustrate, and teach others what we learned. These skills were carried over into my professional work. Using these additional new skills while managing television sports crews became essential in my daily work load. I gained many more people skills, and by doing so, I managed some of the best crews in the East Bay.
4. There have been many jobs where customer service played a key role.
a. Currently, as a Sports Agate Clerk for the Bay Area News Group newspaper company of the Contra Costa Times, I communicate with Junior College and High School coaches during every shift. Making them feel comfortable is an essential part of my function; consequently vital game coverage and statistics are accurately gathered for the sports column. Moreover, I am part of a team of clerks who answer incoming calls and meet all expectations of the caller and the news group.
b. During my Comcast career, I taught classes on how to become a local producer. It was in these classes were I met most of our local producers for the first time. These classes gave me the opportunity to express company policies and procedures with the incumbents. It also developed interpersonal relationships with community members. These relationships went way beyond the boundaries of the workplace. It brought all of us together as a community, to work on environmental issues, or to support community events.
c. There are many other positions involving customer service that I have held. However, this last example had a huge impact on people’s lives.
For years, I managed a mobile Disc Jockey company which had a presents from the Bay Area to Sacramento. The majority of my business came from the wedding sector. During a reception, my service was; welcoming the guests, announcing the wedding party, maintain a timely schedule while being flexible, naturally fusing each element of the reception together, seating guests in an orderly fashion for dinner, personalizing the event for their friends and family, and caring for guests and their concerns throughout the evening. All of that customer service was just during the 4-hour event. My customer service as the owner and operator of a DJ business went way beyond the day of the event.
Customer service functions came into plays nearly 6-months prior to any reception. Many phone conversations, meetings, and reminders via mail were necessary and put the bride and groom at easy during the planning stages. This is why I would be an asset to the public library. If I can organize an event with so much meaning as for the most important day in a couple’s life, I am confident that I can be a great asset to the Oakland Public Library and the magnitude and impact the library system has on its community.
It is my conscientious effort that everything I have learned in my life experience I apply to my daily life.
